Balance in both ways - free and control

Knowledge in nature is free and to be shared. It lives as long as people passes it on to someone else or used in a good way. Somehow, we know that people are not perfect and we do not live in a world where everything is good and perfect. Some people like to do everything that they can to get what they want without considering any consequences. With the internet technology, everything is borderless and this includes knowledge. This is great because this means that we can share and develop our ideas for future benefits.

Unfortunately, there are also bad consequences when we use this technology to spread ideas. People will steal the idea and use it as if the idea were theirs. That’s why we have copyrights. Copyrights are the law that protects the ownership of a property of any kind. They give incentives to people who are working hard to make new ideas and this eventually helps to preserve and promote the science and useful arts. But alas, today the copyrights were extended so that the company will get incentives for a long period – do correct me if I am wrong, this is what I understand. Isn’t this a waste? While implying this, there might be someone out there that has great ideas to improvise the current ideas but they could not spread it because of the copyright laws. We will slow down the development of the world eventually.

Plus, copyrights also impede the progress of creativity. For example, in Lawrence Lessig Final Free Culture Video, he shows in his presentation about how people are being creative and how this amazes me because they do are valuable. In my opinion, before professor Forrest Perry talked about it, I think there should be some flexibility in copyrights. There should be both freedom and control because in Lessig Free Culture says that “the rough divide between the free and the controlled has now been erased’. This means that everything is unclear. I think people should be free to share in order for a better world and at the same time the knowledge have to be preserved.
